Our inner sense of right and wrong isn't just from our minds, it comes from God. It is the voice of God. It's the Holy Spirit talking to us, guiding us in every situation we face, especially when making choices. Ellen White states, “Conscience is the voice of God, heard amid the conflict of human passions; when it is resisted, the Spirit of God is grieved.” 5T 120 Isaiah 30:21 also speaks about conscience, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'” Moment by moment, wherever we go and whatever we do, the Holy Spirit is guiding us. So, when we ignore the small gentle voice speaking to our conscience, we're disregarding what God is trying to tell us.
If we keep ignoring or going against our conscience by sinning, sinning or yielding to temptation becomes easier to do so in the future. This can cause our hearts to grow cold, making it harder to discern right from wrong. It's like numbing ourselves to what's true and right. Numbing leads to the hardening of the heart, making it more challenging to respond to the Holy Spirit’s promptings. Ellen White emphasizes, “When a person once neglects to heed the invitations, reproofs, and warnings of the Spirit of God, his conscience becomes seared, and the next time he is admonished, it will be more difficult to yield obedience than before. And thus with every repetition.” 5T 120
It's clear that conscience is God's voice guiding us, and if we ignore it, we grieve the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:30 says, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
Neglecting or resisting this guidance leads to a hardened conscience, making it easier to continue disobeying. Ultimately, our actions and choices lead to spiritual destruction. Ellen White emphasizes, “We want all to understand how the soul is destroyed. It is not that God sends out a decree that man shall not be saved. He does not throw darkness before the eyes which cannot be penetrated. But man at first resists a motion of the Spirit of God, and, having once resisted, it is less difficult to do so the second time, less the third, and far less the fourth. Then comes the harvest to be reaped from the seed of unbelief and resistance. Oh, what a harvest of sinful indulgences is preparing for the sickle!” 5T 120
Let's not fall into negligence in our spiritual journey. Neglect is dangerous to our souls. Ellen White says, "It is not only by resistance but by neglect that the soul is destroyed." DA 323
“God destroys no one. The sinner destroys himself by his own impenitence.” 5T 120 Impenitence means not feeling shame or regret about one's actions or attitudes.
What a wonderful God we have! He empowers and guides us through the Holy Spirit. May we ask God for the spirit of discernment, so that we will know how to listen to God’s voice in our conscience.
