“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
The role of good works in our Christian life can sometimes feel confusing. On one hand, Ephesians 2:10 tells us we are created "unto good works." This implies good works are important! Yet, we
also know salvation comes through faith in Christ alone. So, where do good works fit in?
Ellen G. White clarifies, “Let no one take the limited, narrow position that any of the works of man can help in the least possible way to liquidate the debt of his transgression. This is a fatal deception. If you would understand it, you must ... with humble hearts survey the atonement. This matter is so dimly comprehended that thousands upon thousands claiming to be sons of God are children of the wicked one, because they will depend on their own works. God always demanded good works, the law demands it, but because man placed himself in sin where his good works were valueless, Jesus’ righteousness alone can avail.” SDA Bible Commentary 6:1071.
We are saved by grace alone, through Christ's sacrifice. Our good works can never "earn" our salvation or erase our past sins. However, true faith is a living faith. When we accept Christ, our
hearts are transformed. A desire to live a life pleasing to God and to help others naturally follows. Our good works become the outward expression of the inward change that has taken place. How
can we identify genuine faith in someone? It's through their good works. Good works serve as clear evidence of genuine faith.
Think about a fruit tree. The tree doesn't produce fruit to earn its place in the orchard. It produces fruit because it's a healthy tree! Good works are the fruit of a life transformed by
Christ's love.
Reflection Question:
Think about a time you felt compelled to do something good for someone else. What motivated you? How did it make you feel?
